Cob and Lime have been a major part of Edward Scutt's life since 1999. He has been on specialist Master Craftsmen training courses in Lime mortars and Renders (West Dean College) and lime seminars but most of his knowledge comes from many years of hands on experience and learning all the time.

Client Testimonials

Edward's knowledge and understanding of old buildings is second to none and he has played an instrumental role in helping us to make educated decisions about the renovation of our property. Inside the house he helped us to keep much of the old plaster and repair only where necessary. We were especially grateful to his works to the outside of the house including the parapet wall which is not only safe and secure but now looks fantastic and has maintained its original charm. He is always sympathetic to the building and its history but also modern day requirements and we are more than happy to recommend him.

Lucy Tween, 3 Silver St, Wilton

"It was a pleasure and an education to employ Ed to lovingly care for and restore our rather neglected cob walled house. He was reliable, passionate about his work, and offered a service beyond expectations.
We now feel we have a house which has been authentically restored, will stand the test of time for many many years to come, and as a bonus we've learnt something about our property along the way and become true fans of the qualities of cob.
We would have no hesitation in recommending Edward Scutt as a first class knowledgeable practitioner in his field."

Carolyn and Robin Gow, Appletree Cottage, Berwick St James

Thank you so much for the work you did on our problematic wall. It is still looking extremely fine and we are still receiving compliments from our neighbours about its appearance. Also, 5 months after you finished the work, we have just had a stretch of 3 weeks of continual rain and there has been no evidence of penetrating damp at all, so your render certainly seems to be doing the job we needed. Thank you so much. We will definitely be recommending you to our friends and neighbours.

Michal Sorga, The Old Chapel, Corsley

"I'm very pleased to recommend Ed Scutt to anyone who has true restoration or conservation work to be done and in particular those seeking knowledge of cob and lime works.
Though I work in the building industry I found it difficult to find someone who truly understood and had working knowledge of the use of lime and cob 200+ years ago.
I certainly struck lucky with Ed, he has spent years investigating and questionning current thinking in cob repairs and it shows in his work.
Work was completed to an extremely good standard, on time and in budget."

Robert Newman, Heronwood, Middle Woodford

"Ed is a highly personable and dependable restorer, with a dedicated passion for his work.
We were delighted with the transformation of our old very badly damaged mistreated cob walls.
He has a well researched and studied in depth knowledge of the fabric of ancient buildings which he enthusiastically imparts during a survey, and he practically applies this in a professional and conscientious manner as he works.
He shows great attention to detail is technically proficient and has a wealth of creative ideas and touches to bring a project to completion with appropriate embellishments for the period of the building.
Importantly, he instils enthusiasm to the owner of the building to maintain the building correctly after his departure, which is vital.
Access to an electrical point is essential, not least for making coffee …… but the result is excellent!
Very highly recommended."

Lime finishes, Cob and Damp Consultant

Edward is more than happy to come out to your property if relatively local to Great Wishford, or travel further if expenses are covered to assess and advise what work is appropriate be it lime render repair, traditional cob repairs, lime pointing or damp issues in older properties. He will of course be happy to carry out remedial works if required or advise if other trades would be more suited to your individual case.

If you are local he can drop by for a quick chat and provide free estimates or if you would like a longer consultation this can be arranged for a nominal charge for the time taken (usually between an hour or two).
